The impeachment obsession is getting out of control. Yesterday, Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) announced he will force a vote today to impeach President Donald Trump, a move that leaders of the Democratic party have long sought to fend off. Naturally, this stance has done nothing more than increase the agitation from a small faction of liberal members that desperately wants Trump out of the office.
Yesterday, Green wrote in a letter to colleagues that he loves America, this being the reason why he will bring articles of impeachment to a vote in the House of Representatives. Regarding this move, experts assured that lawmakers may offer “privileged” motions on impeachment under House procedures. Basically, this means that an individual member can force consideration of the subject.
According to an aide, Republican leaders who control the House intend to vote to table it. Naturally, this action would force Democrats for the first time to go on the record on a measure that would call for the president’s removal from office. In addition, these Democrats would have to face an unpleasant moment when many will likely join Republicans to bury this measure without immediate consideration.
In his impeachment resolution, the Texas Democrat argues that the president´s conduct in office –while not criminal- amounts to “high misdemeanor” that warrants removal from office.
While some Democrats have made a lot of noise regarding the intentions of an impeachment and removal, only a handful of them have officially called for these measures. In fact, Democratic leaders have called such discussions premature, which has created an important division within the party.
Back in October, Green nearly forced an impeachment vote, but this was pulled back amid pressure from the leaders of the party. As the reported in previous articles, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi has said she’s opposed to pursuing impeachment. In fact, she has complained about Democratic mega-donor Tom Steyer’s ad calling for this move against Trump.
So far, at least five House Democrats are among the expected who will vote to proceed. Naturally, this includes Green, who first endorsed impeachment after Trump’s commentary after the tragic event that took place in Charlottesville.
In mid-November, Congresswoman Marcia Fudge along with Congressmen Luiz Gutierrez, Adriano Espaillat and Steve Cohen and introduced five articles of impeachment against the U.S. commander in chief.
In his impeachment resolution, the Texas Democrat argues that the president’s conduct in office –while not criminal- amounts to “high misdemeanor” that warrants removal from office. In addition, Green hits Trump’s decision to share videos from a right-wing British group, and his handling of the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville.
Green also says that Trump has made a lot of moves that amount to “inciting hatred and hostility.” He pointed out these actions were the attempt to ban transgender people from joining the military, his Twitter attack on Frederica Wilson, his response to the hurricane in Puerto Rico, and his ban on travel from some Muslim-majority nations.

In his letter, Green says that the framers of the Constitution wanted a means to remove a president who has caused harm to society, even when he committed no crime. Additionally, he pointed out that impeachment was basically designed for a time such as this one “and a president such as Trump.” The Texas Democrat assured this was prophetically defined by the framers of the Constitution.
According to his words, he doesn’t want to impeach president Trump, but he believes it is the correct action to take. In fact, Green was seen cordially interacting with the president during his visit to the state of Texas back in September in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. At the end of the letter he sent to his colleagues, he assured that history will be his final judge, and vindication his eternal reward.
While this move will clearly execute a lot of pressure on the Democratic Party, the truth is that Pelosi could represent a huge obstacle. After all, she publicly opposed the movement to impeach Trump, despite her disagreements with him. In fact, she even told CNN last month that impeachment “It’s not someplace that I think we should go.”

Pelosi assured that even when she doesn’t want to dampen anybody´s enthusiasm for what they believe, impeachment is not exactly the best move the Democratic Party could execute.
With all the cards on the table, it seems that the Democratic Party is reaching a turning point where a strong division is inevitable. After all, the differences between those who want the impeachment and those who don’t will get bigger and bigger.
In this internal battle, only Republicans win.
