“Divide and Rule” and “Divide and Conquer”

Almost since its inception the United States Federal Government has sought to control us by the the old tried and true method of “Divide and Rule,” oftentimes referred to as “Divide and Conquer,” from the Latin divide et impera.

For the purposes of this rant, I will simply refer to it as “Divide and Conquer.”

Earliest Uses of Divide and Conquer

Among the first uses were recorded by historian Flavius Josephus in 169-170 A.D. when he reported on the parting of the Jewish nation into five conventions by Gabinius.  It was also utilized by French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and Roman Emperor Julius Caesar.

In politics and sociology, divide and rule (derived from Latin: ( divide et impera) and (also known as divide and conquer) is a combination of political, military and economic strategy of gaining and maintaining power by breaking up larger concentrations of power into chunks that individually have less power than the one implementing the strategy.  The concept refers to a strategy that breaks up existing power structures and prevents smaller power groups from linking up.”

In the United States, the strategy of Divide and Conquer was first discussed in an interesting exchange occurring pre-publication of The Federalist Papers #10. James Madison, in  a letter to Thomas Jefferson of October 24th, 1787, summarized the basic thesis of what was to become Federalist #10:

Over a month before publishing #10, Madison sent Jefferson a confidential summary of its precepts to Jefferson:

Divide et impera, the reprobated axiom of tyranny, is under certain qualifications, the only policy, by which a republic can be administered on just principles.”

Americans of the era associated this concept with the despots from whom they had just fled, hence the private exchange.  Most scholars have carefully excised any mention of the Founding Fathers’ embrace of this philosophy from history, preferring instead to flaunt the principles of freedom espoused therein.

Control by Social Bias

The Government, by its policies and practices, actually encourages division by social bias, pitting one strata of society against the other.  A few common examples are racial, gender, and nationality:

1. Division by Race

A classic example of Divide and Conquer is the division of the races. I truly believe that much of the racial divisiveness that has plagued the United States comes, not some much from bigotry, but from the policies and practices of the Government. President Lyndon Johnson’s so-called “War on Poverty” was really not against poverty, but a very clever implementation of “class warfare,” which I will comment on below.

Division of the sexes is another way the Government controls you. The so-named “Feminist Movement” was begun in the 1800′s and then called “Woman’s Suffrage,”  demanding voting rights for women, among other grievances.  When, during World War II, women replaced men in the factories, they attained a great deal of independence, and many were reluctant to simply return to the kitchen when the War ended.  Low wages and confiscatory taxes have exacerbated this conundrum, mandating a need for two breadwinners in most families.  The public school system to the rescue (see below)!

Coming to be known euphemistically as “Woman’s Lib” (short for liberation), it was resurrected in the latter part of the 20th Century, primarily by a woman named Gloria Steinem, who was, at least, encouraged by the Government and, at most, was an operative of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

But don’t believe me, read what Wikipedia has to say about her:

Steinem attended Waite High School in Toledo and Western High School in Washington, D.C., from where she graduated. She then attended Smith College, an institution with which she continues to remain engaged. In the late 1950s, Steinem spent two years in India as a Chester Bowles Asian Fellow.

“After returning to the U.S., she served as director of the secretly CIA-funded Independent Research Service, and worked to send non-communist American students to the 1959 World Youth Festival. In 1960, she was hired by Warren Publishing as the first employee of Help! magazine.”

Steinem later founded Ms. [magazine] with CIA funding.  I am with a doubt certain that Steinem was part of Project Mockingbird, the CIA’s covert plan to infiltrate both the print and broadcast media with its operatives which was begun in the 1950′s.  I will discuss more about this below.

The Government used Steinem and the Feminist Movement to destabilize American society.  Feminism fractured Vietnam war protesters and caused divisiveness within the Civil Rights Movement.  This served the Government’s purpose by keeping all these “movements” alive wile not allowing them to get our of control and attain too much influence (see Social Engineering chart, below).   In more recent years, CIA asset Steinem has woven her Feminist protests into the Government’s continual public relations assault on Iran— not Muslim Woman’s rights, but Iranian woman’s rights.  Note how insidiously the Government has melded one social issue to suit its own purpose.  They are taking a similar tact with other social issues such as environmentalism.

When the feminist movement petered out (pun intended), the Government created the “War on Drugs” which was really just beginning of the full frontal assault on our liberties.

3. Division by Nationality

The Government has controlled us by national origins for many, many decades, but only recently has increased its efforts.  When the immigration “boom” from the last part of the 19th Century until the first part of the 20th Century.  Immigrants congregated in enclaves in larger cities which came to be known as “Chinatown,” “Greektown,” “Little Italy,” and so forth.  Beginning in the last part of the 20th Century, the Government began to promote disunity and distrust of descendants of non-European/non-African descent.  One of the ways that they did this was by discouraging the assimilation of their cultures into American society.  This is not to say that a blended culture is bad, I believe that some “multiculturalism,” as it is known, is good.  Skills brought here by immigrants made the United States stronger in many respects. Customs and traditions from other countries made us unique.  But the immigrants always embraced their new homeland and learned the language, history, and traditions.  Not so today.  Although the Government still requires basic English skills and a brief knowledge of United States history in order to pass the immigration test, the Government also does not enforce its immigration laws, thereby allowing immigrants to bypass these requirements. A great example that is occurring now it the immigration of people from Mexico.  Now, so much of everything is written is both Spanish and English that a Spanish speaking immigrant has absolutely no incentive to learn English in order to get by in the United States today.  For a classic example of how problematic this has become, all one has to do is look toward the north to Canada and how the French speaking citizens of that country has forced the Canadian Government to enact laws that require almost everything to be written in both English and French.  They even have statutes requiring business signage to have a certain percentage written in French.  This division has resulted in the so-called “French Canadians” to repeatedly try to secede predominantly French Quebec from Canada.

The so-called illegal alien problem (no matter from where the illegals hail)  is not addressed by the Government, thereby encouraging an “underground economy,” which essentially forces illegal immigrants to work for near-slave wages and drives down the wages of legal citizens.  You would think that the Government would want to have their tax revenue, but it is, apparently, more important to maintain dissension and a cheap source of labor for the Corporatocracy.

Control by Prohibition

Starting in the late 1800′s and in a harbinger of what was to come, a woman by the name of Carrie Nation spearheaded a drive to outlaw alcoholic beverages.  By the early part of the 20th Century, the Government had learned that there was a lot of money to be made and control attained by the encouragement of getting the 18th Amendment to the Constitution passed which outlawed alcohol production and consumption, commonly called “Prohibition.” This archaic law not only caused an increase in crime, particularly organized crime, but also greatly benefited the United States Government by strengthening Federal law Enforcement in the form of the [then] little-known Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and allowing them all sorts of latitude, including the arming of its agents.  Upon public outcry, the Amendment was repealed, but the Federal Government did not shed its newly gleaned authority, instead deciding to create a new income source in the form of a tax on alcoholic beverages, thereby creating an entirely new scope of Federal bureaucracy in the guise of armed Revenue Agents, the precursor of today’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Forearms, and Explosives (BATF).

The Government also learned that they could use irate, vigilante women to support their cause.  And before you ladies reading this bestow your ire upon me, let me just say that there are many noble, brave women within the Patriot Movement as well.  Just so they’re on the right side.

Guns for Drugs for hostages in the

Naturally, in the best Hegelian Dielectric fashion (“problem; reaction; solution”), the Government, through our friends at the CIA, actually imported drugs into this country in order to clandestinely purchase weapons in support of the Nicaraguan Contra resistance, and directly in violation of federal law, resulting in a number of indictments which came to be known as the “Iran-Contra Affair.” The defendants were pardoned by former CIA Director George H. Bush at the end of his Presidency in 1992, including Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger. What began, from the public’s perspective, as weaponry in exchange for the hostages held by Iran in 1986, turned into a sophisticated gun and drug running operation based out of Mena, Arkansas.   A complicit Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton was rewarded by being “promoted” to the Presidency.

This practice continues to this day in the form of CIA torture (“rendition”) planes. Such an aircraft crashed in Mexico in 2008 and was found to have 3.3 tons of cocaine on board!

Control by Patriotism

The Government also controls you by instilling a sense of what I will call patriotism, with terms like “Remember the Alamo” (1836), “Remember the Maine” (1898), “Remember the Lusitania” (1915), “Remember Pearl Harbor” (1941), and, of course, “Remember 9/11” (2001).

For purposes of this rant, I will not delve into which of the above events were so-called “conspiracies,” and/or “false flag operations,” as I will save that for another rant on The Daily Brian. Suffice it to say that it is undisputed that the one thing that all of the above incidents do have in common is that the fact that the United States Government used them to whip up the populace into a patriotic, pro-government, pro-war mentality. Anyone dissenting was demonized and vilified as “unpatriotic” or “un-American.” For instance, U.S. Congressman Charles Lindbergh, Sr., father of the famous aviator whose name he bears, has been remembered by history for his staunch opposition to World War I, when the reality he should be best remembered for his opposition to the [private] Federal Reserve Bank, culminating with the bringing of articles of impeachment against members of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in 1917, changing them “…in a conspiracy to violate the Constitution and laws of the United States…”

Once citizens are excited in a flag-waving frenzy, the Government— or any government, for that matter— has practically carbte blanche to do what it pleases towards that end.

Control by Social Engineering

Yet another way the Government seeks to control you is through social engineering, which manifests itself in the United States in the form of a graduated income tax. In the Robin Hood fashion of “Take from the rich and give to the Poor,” the actuality of this practice in the last few decades has been to “Take from the middle class and give to the poor.” While I do think of myself as standing in opposition to assisting the needy, I do believe that the wealthy classes (including corporations) are not paying their fair share. This form of control also plays well with the “Divide and Conquer” method of control, since it pits the needy against the not-so-needy and allows the corrupt politicians to pander to the lower classes for votes.

A very clever method of control by social engineering was Lyndon Johnson’s “War on Poverty,” mentioned above, which not only promoted class warfare, but was, in fact, a war on the poor male, particularly the African=American male. The policies and practices on this welfare program had the following net effects:

• It promoted illegitimacy by “rewarding” women for having more children out of wedlock; by

• Removing the father-figure from the home; which

• Replaced the man with the woman as head-of-household; and

• Lowered the self esteem of the man by removing his breadwinner status; and

• Attempted to collect child support from unemployed, underemployed, or unemployable men, under threat of incarceration; which

• Forced the men to seek alternative forms of income, such as selling drugs or other crime or enlisting in the military (sometimes forced via the draft or as a sentencing alternative to prison); and thereby

• Provided a ready supply of men for the prison-industrial and military-industrial complexes (recall that the Vietnam War was in full tilt); and most importantly

• It was designed to keep the poor impoverished, for the most part, with very little chance of improvement

Control by Economic Policy

The implementation of an income tax is the second of the ten “planks” of the Communist Manifesto as defined by Wikipedia:

A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.”

The policies of the Government, regardless of political party, have been to absolutely eviscerate the middle class of this country, making true the adage of “the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.” This is also extended to foreign trade policies which offer tax incentives to firms that move their manufacturing offshore, as well as policies which outright subsidize the outsourcing of American jobs, for example, Information Technology (IT) and call center employment to India.

Control by Information

In my rant about Incrementalism, I mentioned another plank of Communism which is used to control you:

Centralization of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the State.”

The United States Government has, since 1934, held sway over electronic communication, through the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and holds licensees hostage if they do not conform to certain rules, especially within the realm of public service. There is also a tacit understanding that radicalism is not tolerated by licensees. During the Clinton Administration, laws were enacted that allowed the FCC to hold auctions for radio spectrum, which effectively eliminated all but only the very rich corporate media conglomerates from obtaining licenses.

In the same rant, I also elucidated on the fact that the Government at one time pressured newspapers into divestiture of their broadcast outlets, in the guise of eliminating the perceived “local news monopoly,” when, in fact, it allowed the above-mentioned media conglomerates to attain control on a national basis, conveniently ignoring any “national news monopoly,” but all while making a lot of Wall Street-types a great deal of money.

As I mentioned above, the CIA instituted Project Mockingbird, a secret plan to infiltrate the media.

Project Mockingbird, often erroneously referred to as Operation Mockingbird, was a secret CIA campaign to influence domestic and foreign media beginning in the 1950s.  Wikipedia describes it thus:

The activities, extent and even the existence of the CIA project remain in dispute: the operation was first called Mockingbird in Deborah Davis’ 1979 book, Katharine the Great: Katharine Graham and her Washington Post Empire.  Davis’ book, detailing how the media had been recruited and infiltrated by the CIA for propaganda purposes, was controversial and not always accurate. More evidence of Mockingbird’s existence emerged in the 2007 memoir American Spy: My Secret History in the CIA, Watergate and Beyond, by convicted Watergate “plumber” E. Howard Hunt and The Mighty Wurlitzer: How the CIA Played America by Hugh Wilford (2008).

This is why the Government desperately wants to control the Internet. They are unable to control the flow of information for one thing and, for another, to reiterate the last sentence of the Wikipedia definition of Divide and Conquer:

The concept refers to a strategy that breaks up existing power structures and prevents smaller power groups from linking up.”

People coming together regardless or race or social status. Like-minded people “linking up.” Can’t have that now, can we?

The Government now openly admits that its agents troll about the Internet, gathering “intelligence” on United States Citizens, not just on those pesky “home-grown terrorists,” but purposes like tax collection, too.  See this CNN story of April 8th 2010, which states:

The IRS also uses social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and even Google Street View to investigate taxpayers.

Control by Social Issue

Other ways that the Government divides us are on the issues of gay marriage and abortion. Think about it.

I have not a Libertarian, but more of a Constitutionalist view of same-sex marriage, that is to say that the Government has no business sanctioning a union between two people in the first place. This is, and always been the purview of religion, period. If the tenants of your religion condone homosexual unions, then so be it. The Constitution does not address it, then Government has no business regulating it. Do not try to legislate your religious morality on me.

Abortion, on the other hand, is different. The Government does, in point of fact, have an obligation to protect life, particularly life that cannot speak for itself. Its in the Constitution, after all. What is not defined, however, is exactly what constitutes life. At what point does a fetus become life? We can argue all day long about that subject, but that is not the point. If you want to discuss this issue on the basis of religion, remember that in the tenth plague in Egypt, God sent the Death Angel to kill all first-born males, except where they observed the Passover. I will state for the record that I believe that it serves the Government’s purpose to cheapen and dimish the value of life.

Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, and Bill Clinton all had affairs. Were they morally bankrupt and by what standard? Did that make them bad leaders? You decide. Be mindful that many religions condone polygamy. The Holy Bible and Torah have numerous references to it (polygamy is permitted in Judaism, according to Talmudic law). It might interest you to know that the Muslim Holy Qur’an is the only religious book that implicitly states to “marry only one.” So there!

Don’t fall for these traps. Find some common ground. Politicians have greatly used the previous two examples to enhance their collective power, the Republicans on one side of the issue, the Democrats on the other, to the detriment of the country. So we find ourselves polarized on issues that are insignificant. How so, you ask? Because that is exactly how we have amassed all of these downright dishonest elected officials. People vote based on these single conservative/liberal issues while ignoring everything else.

Control by Education

Still another  way that the Government controls us is expressed in the last plank of the Communist Manifesto as in Wikipedia:

Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children’s factory labour in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production.

I mentioned above that the want for women to be independent and the need to have two-income families caused the public school systems of the country to step up and indoctrinate our children with a government-controlled curriculum.  As you know, families and religious organizations that provide educational alternatives are often under fire from the Government.  With the implementation of the United States Department of Education in 1979, the control was complete.

Here is a recent example from the May 10, 2011 issue of the Washington Times:

The death of Osama bin Laden was the ultimate teachable moment, but it has left teachers, parents and educators scrambling to tell the story of Sept. 11 and the career of the world’s most wanted terrorist to a new generation of schoolchildren— many of whom were not even born when the planes crashed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

“With no standard curriculum in place, teachers across the country have been forced to develop their own methods to talk about the traumatic events of the past decade in the classroom. Many have turned to privately created lesson plans, videos, classroom discussions, designs for mock memorials and the use of newfangled tools such as Google Earth to chart the attacks and the patterns of terrorism around the globe.

“‘Unless a curriculum is put in place in districts across the country, [the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks] will become more and more obscure’ to students, said Maria Hartmann, a special-education teacher at West Morris Regional High School in Chester, N.J.”

But, according to an article in the September 9 2009 issue of USA Today:

Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani joined Sept. 11 family members and college professors on Tuesday at a hotel blocks from the World Trade Center site to unveil a plan to teach middle and high school students about the 2001 terrorist attacks.

“The 9/11 curriculum, believed to be the first comprehensive educational plan focusing on the attacks, is expected to be tested this year at schools in New York City, California, New Jersey, Alabama, Indiana, Illinois and Kansas.”

Here found are two examples, respectively, of a woman-with-a-cause (Hartmann) and whipping up patriotism just 2 days before the 8th anniversary of the September 11 attacks (Giuliani).  Do you think Hartmann is not aware of what Giuliani was talking about?  Its highly unlikely.  So why the mention in the media?  Its because that they Government has used the “death” of Osama Bin Laden as an excuse to bring all of these issues to the forefront once again.  (Note that I put the word “death” in quotations because I, not unlike most everyone else on the planet, does not believe the United States version of the death of Bin Laden, but that will be the subject of another rant in The Daily Brian.)

What we have here is a prime example of the Government prefers to “rewrite history” to suit its dictates.  I am without a doubt certain that no mention will be made of any dissenting views of the September 11th attacks and any educator that deviates will be disciplined for not following the prescribed, officially approved, curriculum.

Another long utilized concept is what we were taught about the cause of the American Civil War:   We were taught that the War (called the “War of Northern Aggression” to this day by Southerners), was not about slavery.  That was just the issue for public consumption.  Certainly the issue of slavery was a social issue of prime import, but the real underlying reason was to diminish states’ rights and issue forth a strong Federal Government.  This was just the beginning of what has been a continual erosion of state sovereignty; the 17th Amendment to the Constitution, which changed United States Senators from being appointed by state legislatures to a popular vote, and was ratified on April 8th 1913 along with a spate of other Amendments and legislation which eroded both states’ and citizens’ rights.

Control by Restrictions on Travel

I believe that the United States Government has, for the last 40 years or so, had a great disdain for its citizens’ ability to travel freely.  For example, the Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways was not created so much as to allow the free and unfettered movement of people, but rather primarily for military use and secondarily for commerce. The net effect, however was the resulting urban sprawl and the ability of large companies to undermine local economies by driving business out of town (pun intended).

There are also ill-advised groups and organizations that seek to do away with all private transportation, ostensibly for environmental factors. They are being used. Get rid of the fossil-based vehicles (which will, of course, not happen any time soon as long as Big Oil has something to say about it, that is).

My first cavity search!

More recently we have seen the creation of the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA), which seeks to humiliate and disgrace air travel passengers to the point where many will no longer fly to their destinations, crippling both the airline and tourism industries. And, in the continued policy of incrementalism, the TSA has, sua sponte, decided that it needs to expand its powers to include not only other means of public transportation, i.e., buses and trains (please have your identification ready), but also to malls and shopping centers. Private vehicles will be next, they already have the precedent for the military “assisting” in so-named “Sobriety Checkpoints.”  Once again, we find irate women at the forefront in the form of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). “Your papers, please!” Mark my words!

As of this writing, the TSA has never caught a terrorist. Typical of the Government, they will undoubtedly rectify this trivial detail soon by staging an “event” for their benefit. In fact, the Government has already been caught red-handed in actually assisting would-be “terrorist” to board planes, e.g., the “Shoe Bomber” and the “Underwear Bomber.” The TSA is the Government’s long awaited uniformed Federal Police Department!

Control by Deceit

Let’s face it.  The Government lies to us on just about every subject and in every circumstance.  Politicians are now expected to lie and their bureaucratic minions dutifully follow suit, with no repercussions whatsoever, should they somehow be caught.  And without the benefit of an inquisitive press, their sycophants in the mainstream media just parrot all of the official press releases without question or concern, happily informing a willing, ignorant public what it wants to hear.  Not unlike the proverbial “spoiled brat,” the Government will collectively kick and scream until it gets it way and feels absolutely no guilt for the fibs it tells, like any true sociopath.  When did this behavior start?  Well, according to what we read above, it was apparently begun in Federalist #10, when control of the populace was discussed.  I have read all of the Ben Franklin Poor Richard’s Almanacks of the day, and never once did I see anything discussed on this matter, so this has been occurring in the United States since its founding.  As mentioned above, complicit historians downplay, or conveniently omit, mentions of this fact, instead “towing the party line” of heralding America as a shining bastion of freedom and democracy.

In modern times, probably the most egregious and repeat offender of acts of deceit has been the United States law-enforcement/intelligence community, led on by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).  With little or no oversight by the Congress, the FBI has, from day One, been a harbinger of what was to become the norm in Government circles.  Undoubtedly compromised by Organized Crime over his sexual proclivities, founding FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover for decades waged a war, not against crime, but for control of public opinion.  With a motto like “Fidelity, Bravery, and Integrity” and their clever catchphrase “The FBI always gets its man,” (which was and is, of course, far from the truth), from the onset the FBI has been nothing more than a public relations machine.

Wikiquote says:

Above all, I would teach him to tell the truth. Truth-telling, I have found, is the key to responsible citizenship.  The thousands of criminals I have seen in 40 years of law enforcement have had one thing in common:  Every single one was a liar.” [As quoted in "What I Would Tell a Son," Family Weekly (14 July 1963)]

Hoover was a hypocrite in so many ways.  His public persona was just one of them.  We now know that Hoover had no integrity when it came to protecting the reputation of the FBI and of his own, since they were fairly ubiquitous in his time.  Illegal spying and wiretaps on private citizens were the norm for this out of control agency.  Another intelligence agency is the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), but we all know most of that saga already.  If the principal law enforcement agency in the United States can get away with deceit for so many decades without anything more than an “Aw, shucks!” attitude, other agencies feel free to do likewise.

Suffice it to say that Nazi propagandist Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels had nothing on the United States of America.

Control by Fear

This final section might also be called “Control by Force” or “Control by Coercion,” but I will just call this method of control as the use of fear by the Government.  Fear of the “Hun,” fear of the Nazi, fear of the Communist, and, yes, even fear of the Government itself.  The primary purpose of the Federal Government as envisioned by the framers of our Constitution was for protection. They considered it to be so important that they put it right there in the Preamble:

We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” [emphasis added]

Homeland Security Threat Levels were manipulated for political purposes.

When the “threat” of the “Red Commie” seemed to be waning, just in the nick of time the Government created another “Bogyman,” in the guise of the threat of terrorism, most of which was fabricated, to the point of using false “terror alerts,” which were manipulated for political purposes.

Combining the desire to restrict travel with the so-called terrorist threat, the Government seized upon the opportunity to erode our ability to travel freely outside of the United States, with the implementation of the requirement for a United States Passport to travel to nearby places such as Canada and Mexico, while allowing foreign nationals free, and for all intents and purposes, unrestricted entry in to the country by not adequately securing out borders. In a policy of incrementalism, the Government now requires a complete employment history to obtain a passport. We are literally hostages of our Government in our own country!

These insecure borders also serve a four-fold purpose that suits the Government for control of you:

• It continues to undermine the middle class

• It promotes racial disunity

• It allows politicians to pander for votes

Once again, the Hegelian Dielectric in full force (“problem; reaction; solution”).

The Constitution was intended as a guideline to enumerate the responsibilities of the Government and to protect the citizens from the Government.  Unfortunately, we have permitted the United States Government to slowly decay the precepts espoused therein to the point where they are, seemingly, meaningless.  We have essentially replaced the first ten Amendments contained contained in the Bill of Rights with the ten Planks of the Communist Manifesto!

Control by Shame

The final means by which the Government controls you and is utilized in all of the above methods is Control by Shame.  Make people ashamed to speak out.  Make them embarrassed to discuss “unpatriotic” issues (or, for that matter, any issue adverse to the Government’s status quo).

For instance, take a subject like Unidentified Flying Objects (UFO’s).  Set aside your personal opinion on this phenomenon for the purposes of this rant and look at the facts of the situation, without expressing judgment, and ignore for a moment whatever motive or reasons that you think the Government might have for its actions.  There are thousands of extremely credible witnesses, from all countries and from all walks of life, to strange, seemingly inexplicable objects in the sky, regardless of their origin.  However, the Government has sought to intimidate and harass them by various means, including, but not limited to, threatening visits from Government employees, to absolute ridicule by Government minions of the media.  This was accomplished early in the 1950′s by “poisoning the well,” so to speak, by promoting quirky, less than credible people.  In so doing, they managed to convince the general public that those who believed in extraterrestrials or even reportedly saw a strange object in the sky were bona fide “nutcases.”  Consequently it has become a career-busting step for such occupations as airline pilots, military and Government employees, law enforcement personnel, and others to openly speak about such matters.  Recall the exchange between an Air Traffic Controller and two airline pilots in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind, wherein they all were unwilling participants in an “event,” whereupon Freeman’s  character acts if either wished to report a UFO and he disdainfully replied “Ah… me neither.”

Another, more current example would be the “playing of the race card” when dealing with criticism of President Barack Obama.  Anyone and everyone who dares to challenge him on any issue is deemed a racist.  No normal person wants that moniker, especially those with any form of a public platform, whether they be a politician, political pundit, or just Your Average Joe, so they are shamed into silence.  It is my form belief that The People Who Control Everything knew this when they selected Obama and shepherded him into the Presidency.

Never, ever be ashamed of your opinions!

Do not be Fooled!

Be ever vigilant of the Government and its practices. Always seek to find the real meaning of what they do.  Be weary of “mission creep” and incrementalism at all times.  Be on the alert for bureaucratic encroachment of your liberties.   Be especially mindful of individuals who are suddenly thrust into the public limelight such as the likes of Carrie Nation, Gloria Steinem, and the MADD Mothers.  Always be suspicious of your Government because they are always suspicious of you!  Your failure to do so will result in you getting the Government that you deserve!
